Notre Dame cathedral reopens towers with enhanced fire protection

en

Six years after a catastrophic fire gutted its roof and spire, Notre Dame Cathedral has reopened its iconic towers to the public—now fortified with advanced fire protection systems designed to prevent another disaster.

The April 2019 blaze shocked the world, destroying centuries-old timber and threatening the structural integrity of one of Europe’s most beloved landmarks. Since then, a $1 billion restoration effort has transformed the cathedral into a model of historic preservation and modern safety.

Fire Safety at the Heart of Restoration

Central to the reconstruction was the installation of new fire prevention measures. The cathedral’s massive roof—once made entirely of ancient oak—has been rebuilt with fire-resistant materials and divided into three separate zones by metal firebreaks. These trusses are designed to contain any future fire, preventing it from spreading across the entire structure.

Philippe Jost, the government’s reconstruction coordinator, emphasized that the upgrades were discreet yet effective:

“The route already existed before the fire, but it has been greatly improved,” he said, referring to the 424-step climb to the belfry, now equipped with enhanced safety access.

Modern fire detection systems have also been integrated into the medieval architecture, including heat sensors, smoke alarms, and rapid-response protocols. These systems are monitored continuously, ensuring early warning and swift intervention.

A Symbol of Resilience

President Emmanuel Macron inaugurated the restored towers on September 19, declaring the cathedral “regaining all its splendour.” Visitors are once again able to ascend the towers and enjoy panoramic views of Paris, with strict safety limits of 19 people at a time.

The reopening marks a major milestone ahead of the full cathedral restoration, expected to be completed by December 2024. Tickets for the tower visits sold out within minutes, reflecting global enthusiasm for the revival of this cultural icon.

Notre Dame now stands not only as a monument to faith and history—but as a beacon of resilience, rebuilt with the lessons of fire and the promise of protection.
