BLEVE under a downtown bridge caused by propane from a homeless camp

An explosion and a fire under the Bathurst Street bridge was watched by a large number of residents in downtown Toronto on Saturday night. Some described it if a bomb had gone off in the downtown area. 

According to CBC News, people in the neighbourhood reported hearing a loud explosion around 11:11 p.m. EST . Minutes after, Twitter had several photos and videos showing flames and black smoke coming out from under the bridge. 

An article in the Toronto Star shows several of the videos depicting the fire after the explosion under the bridge. 

There was a homeless encampment under the bridge, and a spokesperson for the Toronto Fire Department said the explosion was potentially the result of propane and aerosol bottles:

"The fire spread through the encampment, causing propane in several propane tanks to boil and expand, resulting in what firefighters call a “boiling liquid expanding vapour explosion” underneath the bridge.

In a tweet Sunday afternoon, Toronto Fire Chief Matthew Pegg said investigators had completed their investigation into the fire.

"We have confirmed that there was a boiling liquid expanding vapour explosion (BLEVE) during the fire," Pegg wrote.

Toronto police say nobody was injured in the late-night fire under the Bathurst Street bridge at Fort York Boulevard.
